A district in coastal northwestern Morocco, involving the twin cities of Salé and Rabat. The region attracting numerous Moriscos (Islamic Spanish refugees) in the 16th and early 17th centuries, it became the autonomous headquarters of the Sallee Rovers, Muslim pirates and slave raiders who preyed upon European shipping and coastal communities, a practice that did not abate until the latter 18th century.
