One of the best-known early Mesopotamian states, the Assyrians began as tent-dwelling nomads, developed into a brilliant and long-lasting empire, and then were plowed under by succeeding peoples in turn. They survived the collapse of their empire, though, and even today there are Assyrian people living both in Mesopotamia and abroad.
