A district in southwestern Nigeria, north of Lagos, southwest of Ibadan, and not far from the Benin frontier. It was established by Egba Yorubas in the wake of the disintigration of the old Oyo kingdom in the face of increasing attacks from the Fulani out of the north. Abeokuta rulers, called Alake of Egbaland, were early allies of the British in the suppression of the slave trade, especially from Ibadan and Dahomey.
