Located in the western delta, this city provided a base for an ephemeral rival to the Libyan dynasts of the 8th century. According to Manetho, Baknranef was taken prisoner by the Nubian pharaoh Shabaka and burned alive. Manetho and Greek writers referred to him as a “gifted lawgiver”. Astonishingly, his name is mentioned in a vase found in an Etruscan tomb unearthed about 60 miles (100 km.) northwest of Rome.
